This page documents an official policy of the Linguistics Division of the Ministry of Rural Development for the Republic of Evdonia. It is subject to change according to the normal procedures for policy change at the Division.
It is Division policy to use Division SAMPA (Sam-P-A) to accurately represent pronunciations when an IPA input method is unavailable.
Division SAMPA is currently identical to Zompist's version of X-SAMPA. Z-SAMPA is in turn identical to X-SAMPA, with several exceptions. First: in Z-SAMPA, IPA symbols may be used where partial IPA support is available. This is the case for computers issued by the Division, when using sans typefaces that support characters like ə and ŋ. Second: positions of articulation judged possible but not included in IPA are included in Z-SAMPA. Third: "Eight-bit" encodings for vowels are available in Z-SAMPA.

We are developing a Tcl programme to convert Division SAMPA to IPA. If you use this, be sure to preserve your Division SAMPA input - it will help us troubleshoot any problems with the converter.
